Tree

Acrylic on canvas
20 x 20 in

Inspired by the Mayan Sacred Tree a.k.a Wacah Chan, this painting borrows the theme of cyclical nature of human civilisation. This abstraction of a tree is divided into 3 main areas; the roots, the trunk with branches and leaves. The eye movement starts anti-clockwise from the roots on the bottom left side towards the trunk with branches on the right side and the foliage on the top left side and start again with the roots.

The straight lines of the roots are painted vertically symbolising a deep rooted tree. The roots represent the indigenous peoples of the Earth, keeping the ancient knowledge and world tree alive, the Wacah Chan. We cannot cut the root of truth without destroying the entire tree. The semi-circle drawing of the trunk with branches occupying half of the painting gives a cut-out view of the trunk. The branches and the trunk of the tree are those who transduce cosmic knowledge into tangible forms.

The foliage on the top left has been highlighted in green to bring them into relief against the dark mass of the branches and trunk. The leaves of the tree radiate and transmit a continual harmonic universal frequency. Humanity resonating with the sacred cycle is like a living tree. Leaves come and go with the seasons but the roots survive through the winters of our civilization. This root of wisdom deserves to be honored.
