Automne Chinois Series

In Asia, the coming of autumn is always celebrated on a big scale with the background of abundance of harvest, the bright full moon and peach blossoms. The Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival are typical examples of such celebrations, where the bright colour red dominates the festival decorations and is believed to ward off evil spirit and bad fortune. Gold is also an important element as symbol of prosperity and longevity. The use of circles shapes for the flowers throughout the Series symbolizes unity in Chinese traditions.

The painting plays with two different textures, bold textures for the background and simpler and defined spherical forms for the blossom flowers.  The lines of the backgrounds are bold and pre-eminent created by spontaneous, short and fast movements; announcing the presence of the artist and occupying the negative space which is pushed towards the back and bringing forward the blossoms. The diagonal concave and convex lines of the stalks crossing in all directions gives a dynamic feeling to it. The predominant colour of the series is dark red, giving a sense of mystery and the tonal gradual colour of blossom flower of yellow, orange, dark red and dots of gold makes the flowers appears brighter with certain mysticism. A deep and mysterious spiritual tension governs the relationship between the flowers, the colours and the surrounding background.
